Analysis of Lucky and Easy’s “Bully Swimmer” off their Hookah’s release on Ampoule Records by Victor Szabo
Quite an interesting tune! As best as I can tell, this piece is in 12/8 (or 4/4 with a shuffle beat). There is an 8-bar melody that repeats throughout. I got in touch with the producer (Pub) via Myspace, here’s what he had to say:
“Bully swimmer consists of 3 different time signatures. 5/4 time & 7/4 time & 4/4 time.
additional info: not content enough with sequencing and structure, the track was recorded live in one take and was intended to meander and challenge the listener as well as keeping ‘him’ from getting bored recording the track!”
Well done then. The following melody is transcribed from the actual piece (see piano roll view at bottom). I went with the 12/8 time sig because the drums definitely have an steady, accented, triplet feel. So that could be the 4/4 time that Pub was talking about (with a shuffle it is 12/8) The 15:12 could be taken as 5/4 with 1/4-note triplets, as for the 7/4 time, that is over my head.
